Royal Recognition
Queen honors Boyd April 30, 2007 The United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II recently appointed Rotary International President William B. Boyd as a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO). Each year, the queen confers the award on no more than 30 New Zealand residents for public service or for valuable voluntary service to the community. Boyd emphasized that the award is a tribute to Rotary as well. “While Lorna and I are honored for me to receive the QSO, we recognize that this is recognition of the standing of Rotary in our community,” Boyd said, referring to his wife of 52 years. Boyd was recognized for his work in New Zealand, which he has served as a Rotarian since 1971. He has also been an elder and youth leader in the Presbyterian Church, a scout master, and a secretary of several school committees. And in service to his favorite sport, he was a rugby union football referee for more than 30 years. Russell Clarke, president of Boyd’s home club, the Rotary Club of Pakuranga, says club members are collectively delighted that the queen has recognized Boyd. “The club is extremely proud of Bill and Lorna’s wonderful work for Rotary,” Clark said. “The feedback from Rotarians worldwide has been that Bill is a real leader of the Rotary movement. The club is proud that the queen has honored Bill and Rotary with this award. Rob Crabtree, past governor of District 9920 (American Samoa; Cook Islands; Fiji; French Polynesia; New Zealand; Samoa; Tonga) added: “Bill and Lorna epitomize Service Above Self.” An award ceremony will take place later in the year, after Boyd completes his term as RI President. He’ll receive a citation for service to the community as well as a badge and a medal, and he’ll be entitled to use the title QSO after his name. |
